My kids have been playing sports this past year and one of the things I’ve noticed is that it is so much easier to get them to drink water when they are staying active on a regular basis. While the human body is 65% water, the human brain is 75% water – and with children’s brains still developing it is important to provide a healthy source of water.
We are on the rural water system here, and it’s one of those towns where we get the notices in the mail saying their nitrate levels are too high, but don’t worry you can still drink the water. Unless you are pregnant, or old, or ….. So we buy filtered water to drink at the house.
But when we have five kids on soccer that can add up to a lot of water bottles each week, and the kids often refill their bottles from the park tap halfway through the game. Ewwwww….So much for drinking yummy water.
We’ve really been cutting back on the sugary drinks in our family – especially those with artificial dyes in them and have noticed a big difference in my sons’ attitudes and behavior. It’s nice to have the alternative of the new Brita Bottles for Kids with their built-in filter system. Now they can refill their water bottles at the park and ball field without me getting concerned about what they are drinking!

Some tips to encourage children to drink more water:
~ When we drink water, they drink more water.
~ Adding natural flavors like cucumber slices, lemon slices, or raspberries or strawberries can give the water some extra flavor.
~ Have the water accessible by keeping the filter system in easy reach. Make it easy for them to reach so they are more likely to use it.
~ Remind them to drink enough by asking when they come in from playing outside, after physical activity, and regularly throughout the day.
That’s a few ways I’ve helped my kids discover the wonders of water. Brita’s new product, the Brita Bottle for Kids, now provides an easy and fun way to have clean, filtered H2O on the go.
