For about three months now, my husband has been living on juice. He started off with two weeks of a juice fast, eating nothing else, and since then has been juicing for 1-2 meals a day and eating mostly whole foods (with an occasional meal out) for supper. He’s lost about 30 pounds and his health and energy are much improved.
Juicing can be a real experiment. Yes, there are sites with recipes, but many of those are for hard-core juicers. When you’re first starting out, you need something a little, um, sweet? My husband can drink almost anything now, but when he started, it wasn’t unusual for his juices to be mostly apples.
So, we’ve used a few recipes we found online, but we’re also coming up with some of our own. This one is full of orange goodness, which means high in beta carotene and vitamin A: great for healthy eyes!
Orange Power
1 Orange Pepper, stem and seeds removed
1 Sweet Potato, peeled
1½ C. of Watermelon
2 Plums, pitted
2 Carrots
2 Stems of Celery
Juice and drink right away. (Pour over ice to chill if you like your juices cold.) Just remember that freshly made juice oxidizes and loses a lot of it’s benefits within 12 hours, so you want to drink it while it’s fresh!

We are definitely going to have to try this one at our house because my kids LOVE carrots. They know that “carrots are good for your eyes” and will take bites and then squint and stare at each other – it’s so hilarious.

Aren’t kids funny? G was so impressed by the dairy museum tour we went on this week, that he’s purposefully making the healthy choice when it comes to foods. We eat healthy most of the time anyway, but today I cheated and took the boys to Sonic while we were out about town. He got grilled cheese and asked for apple slices and an apple juice instead of fries and a slush. I almost fainted. LOL

I’m going to have to try juicing. I did it years ago before I had kids, but now that I do have kids I’m thinking hmmm, sounds like a good way to get my kids to consume some more fruits and veggies. My middle son has some serious allergy/sensitivity stuff going on and I am really having to reconsider our food choices. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I’ve been thinking of doing a juice fast… might have to add this to the recipe list. 🙂
