Sometimes, we focus so much on encourage our children to love reading that we forget to stimulate our own reading passion. I remember the day when I realized I knew all three- THREE!- verses of The Barney Song. It was then that I began reading for myself. I considered it a tool for self-preservation; a way to keep my mind from turning to mush. That’s when I read my first James Michener book . . . and now I’ve read many of his works.
My local library is actually conducting a summer reading program for adults. The title of the program is Novel Destination, and the theme is traveling to new places. I am very excited, although there is no way I’ll be able to read them all this summer! And, once school begins again, I will be fortunate (and a master of time management) to read one per semester. But, I look at this as a lifetime quest. Care to join me? Here is a portion of the list to get you started. (I am half way through The Poisonwood Bible, which is about a missionary family, set in Congo in 1960.)
