Christian author Miralee Ferrell takes readers back in time to unique places across the U.S. in her novels from the Love Finds You series. Each novel tells the story of a hero and heroine from the 1800s and how they find love together and grow in their faith in God. Love Finds You in Last Chance, California is Miralee’s first book in the series.
Love Finds You in Last Chance, CA
Alex Travers was raised by her father on a ranch just outside of Last Chance, California. When he dies of a sudden heart attack, it’s up to Alex to work the ranch. Her neighbors think she should marry one of the area’s eligible bachelors; Alex wants to run the ranch on her own. However, several wranglers quit because they won’t work for a woman; then horses start going missing and Alex finds her fences cut.
Justin Phillips knew Alex’s father, so when he gets a telegram from the man asking for help on the ranch, Justin jumps at the chance to start over in a new town. Justin soon finds that starting over is easier said than done when the townspeople accuse him of looking like a Wanted Poster and causing the problems on Alex’s ranch. Then Christy Grey—a beautiful dance hall girl—shows up, claiming to be his dead wife’s sister and demanding custody of Justin’s three-year-old son Toby.
Miralee Ferrell spins a good tale from the prologue to the epilogue. Her careful historical research brings Last Chance alive, adding character to each story. Even the minor characters stand out in the novel, from little lisping Toby who only wants to ride a horse to Martha, a townswoman who keeps everyone well-fed.
Miralee writes about strong women in an era when women were supposed to remain in the home. Faith plays a key role in her novels, as the characters struggle with their relationships with God and with each other. Alex must give up her fierce independence to trust God and Justin learns to accept God’s forgiveness for his past.
