If you’re a baker (even if only once in a while), you know how important it is to have vanilla on hand. Oh sure, you can purchase the typical imitation vanilla or the commercial version of pure vanilla extract. But you’ll never know if it’s adulterated (unknown additives) or not, and you won’t have the satisfaction or flavor of homemade goodness, either.
Unadulterated, pure, vanilla bean extract is one of the easiest homemade recipes you’ll ever do and they make beautiful and special gifts. Just look for interesting bottles and print unique labels.
Homemade Vanilla Extract
- Decorative bottles (with screw on lids, corks, or other tight seal)
- Vodka, Bourbon, or Rum
- Vanilla Beans (two per small bottle)
- Funnel
The booze choice is up to you, but I purchased the cheapest vodka I could find. You’ll want to be certain that you have a funnel that has an end small enough to fit into your chosen bottle necks. Speaking of bottles, I think the more interesting the choice, the better. Especially if you’re giving them as gifts.

I made this a few years ago and still have plenty. The longer it ages, the better it is and it does taste so much better than what you buy at the grocery store. Definitely worth it!

We so want to try this!

Love the idea. This is great for those of us who prepare for an emergency, like Hurricane Sandy.

Where do you get your vanilla beans from? How long do they last before using them? I was wondering if you bought too many, would they rot (have to use them all right away)?
