One thing about marriage they don’t always warn you about – the sleeping situation. No not that – the temperature control situation. My idea of a good night’s sleep is three blankets, a heater, warm feet, cozy socks, and – warmth. Warm and snuggly.
My husband’s idea of an ideal sleeping situation is sub-arctic temperatures. During the summer, the AC in our bedroom goes all night long and during the winter we “let the fresh air in.” Also known as sub-arctic temperatures. I think he married me for my icy cold feet. He only pretends to yelp in surprise when I stick them on his warm legs. Really he likes it.
This temperature differential has been known to cause some problems in the past. I like layers of blankets but not feeling smothered or restricted so if Sidney lays on the OUTSIDE of the blankets – That’s not gonna fly. Likewise, he has trouble sleeping if he is too warm or sweaty. Enter the Sleep Number DualTemp!
Overview of the Sleep Number DualTemp
I was invited to review the Sleep Number DualTemp, which included a trip to the Sleep Number Store to check out their product line-up. I enjoyed seeing the different products they had available. The Sleep Number mattresses were reasonably priced – definitely on my list for replacing the mattress we have when the time is right. We ordered the DualTemp layer and arranged for the installation.
The DualTemp layer is about an inch and a half thick and adds comfort to our current mattress. Each side of the layer has it’s own climate control – so Sidney can make his side cold and I make my side warm. It works best when you start it up about 15 minutes before you get in bed. Leave your blankets pulled up – the active air layer will heat or cool under the blankets and create a temperature of your choosing!
Sidney LOVES that he can keep cool air circulating through his side of the bed. And I love that my face is the only thing cool – the rest of me is nice and cozy warm. It’s not just a matter of convenience for me because if I get chilled for too long my back actually hurts and can trigger a migraine. So the DualTemp is perfect for us. Especially as the cooler weather begins to set in.
The funny thing about the DualTemp layer has been seeing where the kids fall in with their temperature preferences. We have two (Brianna and Adam) who like MY side of the bed best. One, Micah, likes Dad’s side of the bed best. Evan hasn’t declared one way or the other and Vivian just likes jumping on the bed, so she doesn’t count.
What you Need to Know about the DualTemp Layer
The units that control the DualTemp layer actually come as two individual plug-in units so you need two plugs for them. We have a surge-protected power strip already in our bedroom so just be prepared for that. The units make about as much noise as a box fan. The white noise doesn’t bother me at all. It actually helps my husband sleep when he’s working night shift as it helps muffle the noise of five, active, homeschooling children. Some people may not like the noise from the fans, but if outside noises bother you during the night, you may find the white noise a benefit, not a downfall.
We had a friend mention that she thought the fans made her bedroom too warm at night. We don’t have central air in our old house so we keep the bedroom temperature cool with a window unit – we don’t heat or cool the entire house at a time. That may be why we’ve not had any trouble with heat generation. Still it’s something to be aware of – you are plugging in two units, so there’s the electricity/potential heat for each.
In our case, it is well worth whatever handful of dollars we add to the monthly electric bill to be able to sleep comfortably. Especially for Sidney trying to sleep during the day. He works so hard overnight – if it’s too warm during the day, he sleeps poorly and then is tired for work the next evening. We’ve seen a big difference in his quality of sleep, even during the days. As for me, I am much more comfortable. I stay warm, my back stays happier, which means less grumpy-making with the kids. And the feeling of slipping into a pre-warmed bed is nearly blissful.
I was sent a DualTemp Layer by Sleep Number to review and have tested it now for about a month. My opinions are my own and you cannot have my warm side of the bed!

That is a really cool product! We have the same issue at our house. In fact, I passed on a Tempurpedic bed when we got our last mattress and opted for a different brand that was the same idea, but with a cool gel top cause Ryan can’t stand to be warm. It’s been GREAT, but I would kinda like to be warmer, especially if I could turn it off. My body doesn’t regulate it’s temperature correctly so I am always cold when I go to bed and sweating when I wake up. I have to remove and replace blankets constantly to stay comfortable. It would be so much easier to flip a switch. hehe

There’s a timer feature where you could run the heat for 1-8 hours. It automatically shuts off after 9 horus if you forget or don’t turn it off.

Isn’t it funny how most women want the sleeping temperature warmer and men want it colder?
But I do also like to keep the window open a bit even in the winter… I love fresh air.

This is a 50 year old woman’s dream. I would LOVE to be able to change the temp, and I need it cold! Nights get HOT in a FLASH! (see what I did there?) Glad you are enjoying your new sleep heaven!
