Recently, I was able to participate as a panelist at a Twitter party sponsored by Seventh Generation (@SeventhGen) and the topic was about teaching your kids to “Live Like the Lorax“. In otherwords, to respect the earth. Y’all know I’m not a crazy hippy freak. But I do care about the earth – our first task as humans was to be wise stewards of the earth.
I left the Twitter party convinced that you can’t as easily teach kids respect for the earth as part of a class or special program. It works best when it’s part of your every day existence. When your kids know the importance of eating healthy, locally-grown food because that’s what you eat.
When recycling is second nature because that’s what you do.
When choosing earth-friendly cleaners is just the right thing to avoid toxic and harsh chemicals in your home.
When being kind to your animals and eating eggs from “happy chickens” is the norm. Nothing special. No big deal.
As with all values, those that stick are those that your kids see you engaged in on a regular basis. They might not know, yet, that other families do things differently, but they will have to make these type of choices for themselves someday. And it will be easier for them if the habit is already part of their life.
I recently published a post about 25 Activities For Kids For Earth Day. But it got me wondering…why only on earth day? Why don’t we take on some of these things on a regular basis?
