I still remember the first commercial I saw for an iPhone. I knew I wanted one, and I got one- a mere 8 years later! You know what they say about patience…
Anyway, besides the fact that I have a camera with me 24/7 and can even blog from my phone, I love that my kids are able to use it for entertainment when we have long waits somewhere. (You can read more about me and my family here.) What I don’t like is for them to watch show after show on it. I love scouting educational apps so was thrilled to have the chance to review PlayTown!
Here’s the basic premise of the PlayTown app:
The kids are the “director” of a play, and they get to choose the characters, backgrounds, and even background music of the play! We played the Pirates version, and each character makes his or her own sound, which can also be added into the play.
What’s so fun and unique about this app is that your child then records his or her voice and narrates the story. Then, you can watch the animated play over and over again! You can even share it with other PlayTown players if you wish, and you can watch their plays as well.
My daughter was a little unsure when I asked her to play a game on my phone, but she quickly became proficient at the app. I love that it’s intuitive (or is it that kids are now born with a technology gene? I just don’t know) enough for her to play without getting frustrated, but still requires her to use creativity and imagination.
If you’re looking for an app that makes use of your kiddos’ brain cells instead of consuming them, PlayTown just might be your next dowload! (Oh and did I mention it’s free? You can buy other in-app options if you like, but they’re not necessary. )
This is a compensated review as Untrained Housewife is a PlayTown Ambassador but all opinions and text are mine.
