School Has Started!
(Hallelujah!) and as a mom with 3 kids ALL in school I now require:
- 13 minutes to myself! No more. No less.
- A whole bathroom experience—sans knocking/whining/fighting.
- One FULL pedicure with no guilt.
- Lunch at a girlie café called Mermaid… with adorable salads and mini pizzas with amaze-ness like: pesto, brie, sundried tomatoes, corn and roasted asparagus. (You know… the kind children HATE!)
- Tissues to capture the tears of joy while enjoying the above items.
ONLY after those mom demands have been met will I have the energy to begin again.
Hence… The Mom New Year
Oh no, January does NOT count as a new year for me. Have you seen what kind of crazy happens right before January? With 3 active school-aged kids, we are coming down from a high of piano recitals, class plays, band concerts, holiday work parties, extended family visits and 1-2 weeks of kids on winter break going slowly insane.
And you ‘think’ January will be calm after the December storm right? WRONG.
Instead, every teacher ramps up to start the New Year with a bang… plus sport teams reset, I get exhausted just thinking about it.
My mom Back to School New Year will consist of volunteering in my kids’ schools. Getting back to the gym, or, what I call ‘Treadmill Therapy’. And possibly, finding my dust covered sewing machine (I used to sew believe it or not, I mean REALLY sew!). It could happen again.
Mom New Year also means Mom is Back to Volunteering IN the School
My favorite way to help out a teacher is to warn them in advance to prepare a full hour of ‘busy work’ for me. I make copies, I cut out piles of orange circle ‘pumpkins’, and generally I turn off my brain for a few blissful moments. In fact, I leave my cell phone in the mom-van (gasp!), it’s true.
I always bring a Diet Coke for the teacher as well.
But that’s our little secret, shhh.
Also this year I’ll be in charge of a few PTO events: Family Math Night, Community Movie Night and the School Rummage Sale in the spring. This might sound like a lot of work, but with VolunteerSpot in your pocket, organizing plenty of helpers and parent volunteers is easy – even for a giant undertaking like a school rummage sale!
Did you know VolunteerSpot created a new free iPad App? It’s called “Clipboard by Volunteerspot.” Once your online sign up is created at VolunteerSpot.com, you simply bring your iPad to a PTO meeting, back to school night or even the first day of school, open the app and watch your sign ups load – pass the iPad around and parents sign up On The Spot… The VolunteerSpot!
Skipping long-hand paper sign ups. (Amen to no more reply-all emails!)
What are you gonna do for the ‘Back to School—Mom New Year?
