Holiday reading is something that I love doing and so when I was asked to review The Beginner’s Bible ®: Come and See Baby Jesus, I was more than happy to do so. Published by Zonderkidz, the children’s book division of Zondervan Publishing, The Beginner’s Bible ®: Come and See Baby Jesus by Catherine DeVries is a board book aimed for preschoolers, ages 3 and up. The book uses artworks from The Beginner’s Bible ® and has 50 lift-the-flaps that make reading it interactive, interesting and fun.
The story begins with an angel telling Mary that she will be blessed with a baby and then, follows Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem where baby Jesus is born. The book uses short sentences and simple language to narrate this tale.
Come and See Baby Jesus – An Educational Book
Brightly colored and beautifully illustrated, this board book has 50 lift-the-flaps that cover colors, shapes, numbers, animal sounds and baby animals. With 5 board pages and 10 flaps on each page relating to a particular subject, Come and See Baby Jesus is a good tool for teaching preschoolers concepts of colors, shapes, numbers, animals sounds and match animal mothers and their babies. The words and language are simple and easy to understand and offer a brief look at the birth of Jesus.
The Beginner’s Bible ® Series – A Christmas Gift for Kids
The Beginner’s Bible ® series include many titles such as Beginner’s Bible for Toddlers, The God Loves Us Collection, Moses and the King as well as the book being reviewed. The series has children’s books that are an appropriate gift for kids of all ages and with colorful illustrations and simple language, are an ideal way to teach young children about Jesus and being a Christian.
Come and See Baby Jesus from The Beginner’s Bible Series talks about the birth of Baby Jesus and also, teaches children various concepts making it a good Christmas gift for kids of ages 3 and up. Since it is a board book, preschoolers will be able to handle the book easily themselves and parents wouldn’t have to worry about torn pages. Moreover, since it is just five pages long it will be able to hold a preschooler’s attention and interest.
My Personal Review
I read Come and See Baby Jesus with my toddler who is 19 months old and even, she was drawn to the colorful illustrations and the flaps. We made it a part of her bedtime routine for a week and by the end of the week, she was recognizing and saying “Mary”, Baby Deejus”, “black”, “pink”, “puppies” and “calf”. She was also less fidgety during the reading since her hands were busy in picking the flaps and exploring them.
Overall, I would say that although Come and See Baby Jesus is aimed at ages 3 and up, younger children could also enjoy the book. The length of the book may seem a little less to parents paying $9.99 for the book; however, the fun flaps, illustrations and language, adequately compensate for the brevity.
In short, The Beginner’s Bible®: Come and See Baby Jesus is easy holiday reading for preschoolers. It teaches without being boring and preachy and although, the price is a bit high, it is a good addition to the family library.
