The Monster at the End of This Book (Sesame Street) by Jon Stone – One of my own personal favorites from childhood and a definite favorite of my kids. I do a fabulous Grover voice, so that probably helps.
Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis – Curtis isn’t just an actress and yogurt spokeswoman… she’s also the author of some pretty fabulous children’s books.
You Get What You Get by Julie A. Gassman – “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” As a parent, you will find yourself saying this over and over – but it works.
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura J. Numeroff – For a tiny mouse he sure does have a busy day after just one cookie. I still think they should write a book entitled “If you give a Mom a nap…”
The Magic School Bus Series by Joanna Cole – Perfect book series for kids who always want to know “why” and “how” things work.
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow – This is a great little board book that will have your kids reading (or singing along) in no time.
The Way I Feel by Janan Cain – I am a huge fan of any books on feelings. As adults, we often forget that our children don’t understand why they feel the way they do sometimes and this story can help normalize some of those feelings.
Olivia by Ian Falconer – Has there ever been a cuter little pig? Especially one with such a grand imagination.
The Grumpy Morning by Pamela Duncan Edwards – Another great story for explaining bad moods and how to “snap out of it” as my mother would say.
Little Monster Did It! by Helen Cooper – Perfect for when a new baby enters the home and an older sibling might be questioning their place in the family.
Fancy Nancy by Jane O’Connor – Aside from the adorable illustrations, Fancy Nancy is skilled at introducing new vocabulary to your little ones.
Pinkalicious by Elizabeth Kann – This little girl is quite confident with who she is, never too early to teach that lesson to children.
Are You My Mother? by. P.D. Eastman – One baby bird’s search to find out which animal is actually is mother.
The Berenstain Bears Series by Stan and Jan Berenstain – Tell me you didn’t at least consider living in the Berenstain Bear Tree House when you were younger? This classic series is fabulous for teaching all kinds of important lessons from manners to the golden rule.
I Like Bugs by Margaret Wise Brown – A rhyming book about bugs that girls and boys alike will love.
Corduroy by Don Freeman – The classic tale of a little girl who brings home a teddy bear with overalls missing one button. She fixes him right up and gives him a home.
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats – This book captures the simple beauty and wonder of freshly-fallen snow all through a little boy’s eyes.
Harold and The Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson – The perfect book for any child with a fabulous imagination.
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown – A great book for separation anxiety. Bunny keeps running away, but his mother finds him every time.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney – I always tear up a little when I read this one and I bet you will too. “I love you to the moon and back.”
Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You : Dr. Seuss’s Book of Wonderful Noises by Dr. Seuss – Animal sounds and Dr. Seuss equals lots of little giggles from young readers.
Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks from A to Z by Richard Scarry – All of the Richard Scarry books are a must-have but the Cars and Trucks one is my favorite – especially the Pickle Car.
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn – Another tear-jerker for the parent reading it aloud, it reassures of a mother’s love even with the world can be a scary place. Each of my children has also read it on the first day of school and made a craft to go along with it that will stay in their memory box for ever.
The Way I Act by Steve Metzger – This book teaches character traits such as, compassion and bravery, with simplicity that I preschooler can understand.
