I made a custom blend for a client who hadn’t slept a full night’s sleep in over six weeks since her accident at work. The pain from her injury was only one part of what was keeping her awake – stress really got to her, especially at night, keeping her awake with buzzing thoughts about what needed to be done, things to do, etc.
I wanted to put together a blend that would help settle her mind and give her some relief from pain – give her rest and help her feel more centered.
I put together a blend of Lavender, Camomile (Roman Chamomile), Neroli, and Ylang, Ylang in a base of my moisturizing, but not-too-heavy, massage lotion.
Lavender essential oil is an amazing oil I wrote about in this Lavender Essential Oil Guide but it helps calm, destress and bring sleep.
Roman Chamomile is well known for it’s sleep inducing properties and using essential oils for those benefits instead of say, drinking a cup of tea, means you get a lot more bang for your buck because of how concentrated the essential oils are.
Neroli is a precious essential oil, rather rare and expensive, that has sedative – almost hypnotic – effects perfect for restless sleepers or those who have trouble falling to sleep in the first place.
Ylang, Ylang essential oil is helpful for its antidepressant and sedative effects as well and is a great skin conditioner and anti-infectious oil.
The next day after taking her natural sleep blend home she came in the shop and said, “You are a miracle worker!”. After several weeks of sleeping only two or three hours at a time she was able to sleep for eight hours!
She said she rubbed the lotion on her face and neck and pulse points and then sat on the couch to watch a movie with her husband because she didn’t “feel tired” yet. Not even making it through the previews she was soon snoring away (literally!) and had some of the best rest she had been able to get in over a month.
